Instant Pot Turkey Chili in a white bowl

If you have ever been to Disneyland or Walt Disney World, you may have had the chance to try Walt’s chili recipe. It is served at both parks and is a fan favorite!

The chili served at Disney Parks is actually Walt Disney’s chili recipe. It is a secret family recipe that Walt Disney passed down to his daughter, Diane. It has been served at the parks since the 1950s!

I decided to recreate Walt’s chili recipe by making some chili in the Instant Pot. It’s a great way to get the same flavor but in half the time! I did make some adjustments on my end… but I’m sure Walt would approve!

This turkey chili recipe is easy to follow and can be made in under an hour. So, if you are looking for a delicious and hearty meal, give this instant pot turkey chili recipe a try!

What is Walt’s Chili?

Walt Disney is known for many different things like creating Mickey Mouse, Disneyland, and Walt Disney World. But did you know that he had his own chili recipe? Yes! This chili is a secret family recipe, but thankfully, they were happy to share, and now is featured at Disney Parks and Resorts.

Walt’s chili recipe is made with ground beef, ground sausage, pinto beans, and diced tomatoes, along with delicious chili seasonings. My version is a bit different since I decided to swap out the ground beef and sausage for turkey. I did use pinto beans, but I also added in some dark kidney beans to make the chili hearty and flavorful!

Ingredients for Turkey Chili

✨ Cooking tips

  • If you are looking to make a spicier chili, you can add more chili powder seasoning or chop up some jalapenos and toss them in.
  • Also, if you don’t have an Instant Pot, this turkey chili can easily be made on the stovetop.
  • If you are looking for a great vegan option, swap out the turkey and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • Don’t forget to drain the canned beans! Adding the beans into the turkey chili with the liquid will make the chili too watery.

✨ How to make Instant Pot turkey chili

First, turn your instant pot to the ‘sauté’ setting and add in some oil. Once the oil is hot, add in the ground turkey and cook until it’s no longer pink. Next, you will want to add all of your seasonings along with the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, canned beans (that have been drained) and stir everything together.

Once all of the ingredients are combined, place the Instant Pot lid on and make sure it’s sealed. Then press the ‘manual’ button and set the timer for 20 minutes. After that, let it do its thing!

Once your instant pot turkey chili is done cooking, release any remaining pressure and open up the Instant Pot.

Serve hot, top with your favorite chili toppings, and enjoy!

✨ Serving ideas for Walt’s chili

Now when it comes to serving Walt’s chili, I personally love to eat it just like they serve it in the Disney Parks!

Serve your turkey chili over some crispy french fries and some freshly shredded cheddar cheese. You can also go with the classic and use the chili to top off a delicious hot dog in a bun. Yum!

OR, a bowl of chili with some freshly diced onions and a dollop of sour cream on top can really hit the spot!

No matter how you decide to serve it, I’m sure Walt and everyone else won’t be disappointed!

✨FAQs

Here are a few questions I get whenever I share Walt Disney’s chili recipe. If you have any more questions, please leave them for me in the comments below or DM me on Instagram!

Can I swap out the ground turkey?

Of course! If you don’t prefer turkey, you can easily use ground beef or vegan crumbles instead.

Is this chili gluten-free?

Yes! As long as the chili seasoning is gluten-free, this instant pot turkey chili will be totally gluten-free.

Can I make Walt’s chili recipe on the stovetop?

Yes! Just follow all of the same steps that you would for an Instant Pot. The only difference is that you will want to cook it on medium-high heat and stir occasionally until everything is heated through.

Can I freeze this turkey chili recipe?

Yes! Just let it cool completely and store in an air-tight container or freezer bag. I personally like to store it in souper cubes. It will keep for up to three months.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 large sweet onion (chopped)
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • 1 46 oz. can tomato juice
  • 1 15 oz. can fire-roasted tomatoes (DO NOT DRAIN)
  • 1 can pinto beans (drained and rinsed)

  • 3 tbsp gluten-free chili seasoning
  • 2 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp seasoning salt
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Press the ‘Saute’ button on the Instant Pot, and add the ground turkey.
  2. Cook the turkey until it’s golden brown and no longer pink (about 10 minutes), crumbling it up into small pieces while it cooks.
  3. Add the chopped onion, and cook for 2 more minutes.
  4. Turn off the ‘Saute’ setting.
  5. Add the garlic salt, seasoned salt, seasoned pepper, chili seasoning, and cumin, and stir well.
  6. Place the kidney beans and pinto beans in a strainer, or colander, drain and rinse well.
  7. Add the beans to the Instant Pot.
  8. Add the stewed tomatoes, brown sugar, and garlic to the Instant Pot, and stir well.
  9. Add the large can of tomato juice, and stir all ingredients together to blend well.
  10. Sprinkle a little more garlic salt on the chili, stir, place the lid on the Instant Pot, and turn it until it beeps and locks.
  11. Set the pressure valve to ‘Sealing’, press the ‘Manual’ button, and set the time to 20 minutes.
  12. When the Instant Pot beeps and goes to off, watch the time, and after 13 minutes, release the pressure; with a potholder, carefully turn the pressure valve to ‘VENTING’.
  13. Make sure all the pressure has been released.
  14. Check the float valve to make sure it’s all the way down.
  15. Remove the lid from the Instant Pot, and stir the chili. It will have thickened a little during cooking.
  16. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
