Cook Time:15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¾ cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 8 slices gluten-free bread
  • 8 thin slices turkey
  • 8 thin slices ham
  • 8 thin slices Swiss cheese
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar for garnish
  • raspberry preserves for serving
  • grapes for serving
  • strawberries for serving

Instructions

  • Fill a large skillet or pan just over ¼ full with vegetable oil. Heat to 375°F.
  • Whisk the egg and water together in a large mixing bowl. Add flour, salt, and baking powder and whisk until smooth.
  • Arrange 2 slices of turkey, 2 slices of ham, and 2 slices of Swiss cheese evenly on 4 slices of bread. Place the remaining slices of bread on top of each sandwich.
  • Dunk each sandwich into the batter mixture. Coat all sides with batter.
  • Carefully place one sandwich at a time into the hot oil. Cook for 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Place the fried sandwiches on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat with the other 3 sandwiches.
  • Sprinkle the hot sandwiches with powdered sugar.
  • Serve with raspberry preserves, grapes, and strawberries on the side. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • This sandwich is inspired by the one at Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans, both located at New Orleans Square in Disneyland.
  • Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. They can be enjoyed warm or cold.
  • Making these sandwiches for a crowd? Place them on a paper towel-lined sheet pan and pop them in the oven in a warm setting. This will keep them warm until you’re ready to serve them.
  • A hack to keep the sandwiches together while you fry them is to place toothpicks on all 4 corners of the sandwich to hold it together.
