Description

The Gluten-Free Monte Cristo Sandwich is a tasty mix of savory and sweet! With layers of juicy turkey and ham and gooey Swiss cheese, all between slices of gluten-free bread, it’s a real treat. Lightly battered and fried to golden perfection, it’s finished off with a dusting of powdered sugar for a sweet twist.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 8 slices gluten-free bread
  • 8 thin slices turkey
  • 8 thin slices ham
  • 8 thin slices Swiss cheese
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, for garnish
  • Raspberry preserves, for serving
  • Grapes, for serving
  • Strawberries, for serving

Instructions

  1. Fill a large skillet or pan just over ¼ full with vegetable oil. Heat to 375°F.
  2. Whisk the egg and water together in a large mixing bowl. Add flour, salt, and baking powder and whisk until smooth.
  3. Arrange 2 slices of turkey, 2 slices of ham, and 2 slices of Swiss cheese evenly on 4 slices of bread. Place the remaining slices of bread on top of each sandwich.
  4. Dunk each sandwich into the batter mixture. Coat all sides with batter.
  5. Carefully place one sandwich at a time into the hot oil. Cook for 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Place the fried sandwiches on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat with the other 3 sandwiches.
  6. Sprinkle the hot sandwiches with powdered sugar.
  7. Serve with raspberry preserves, grapes, and strawberries on the side. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • This sandwich is inspired by the one at Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans, both located at New Orleans Square in Disneyland.
  • Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. They can be enjoyed warm or cold.
  • Making these sandwiches for a crowd? Place them on a paper towel-lined sheet pan and pop them in the oven in a warm setting. This will keep them warm until you’re ready to serve them.
  • A hack to keep the sandwiches together while you fry them is to place toothpicks on all 4 corners of the sandwich to hold it together.
